Whose that Sexy thang, standin’ in the mirror?
You just can’t help but bust a move when you hear Meghan Trainer sing “Who’s that sexy thing, I see over there? That’s me, standing in the mirror.” The music is so catchy you just gotta shake your booty and strut yo stuff! But seriously how many of us women look in the mirror and feel that way?
I had such an enlightening moment many years ago. My husband and I were standing in front of the mirror getting ready. As I crossed my eyebrows disapproving of something on my body, I can’t even remember I glanced over at him just in time to see him give himself a nod in the mirror. When he caught me looking at him he gave his muscles a flex and me a wink. Of course I blushed, because I always do when he winks at me, but I realized he did not criticize his reflection the way I did. And this wasn’t because he was overly arrogant, he just wasn’t that kind of guy. I let out a giggle and said, “so I take it you don’t look in the mirror and pick apart everything you wish was better about your body. He puffed up his chest and said, “Babe, when you got it going on, you just can’t help it.”
I gave him an eye roll and said, “Seriously, I just want to know. Do you ever criticize yourself in the mirror?” He looked at me and as serious as can be said, “Babe, I just don’t see the point in that and I don’t think women should do that to themselves either.”
He response was so matter of fact. It seemed as simple to him as picking out what flavor chewing gum you wanted at the gas station. And he was soooooo right! There is NO POINT!!!
Since then I have worked on taking his approach to that refection in the mirror. I have had my ups and downs for sure. But I really love it when I appreciate that reflection in the mirror. I have now come to the age when things are falling and crinkling. But I still make it a point to give my body the credit it deserves. I mean, she is AMAZING. Her heart beats constantly and her lungs never cease to give me breath. She has carried and delivered 4 beautiful children and her hips will never be the same. She has carried, knelt, cried, hugged and held up those she loves so much. Every dent has a story, every line has an emotion. She no longer carries that innocence of a little girl, but the wisdom of a woman inhabits her being. She is amazing.
I realize we are human, trust me, I am VERY human, and we have our down days, but don’t stay there! Be intentional about giving that woman in the mirror the credit she deserves.
